The Problem of Managing Conky Themes
If you are a long-time Linux user, you know Conky, that legendary program that displays system information on your desktop: CPU, memory, network, weather, and more. Its real power comes from its countless themes, created by the community worldwide.
However, managing these themes has always been a tedious task. Each theme comes in a folder, with configuration files (.conkyrc or conky.config), possibly helper scripts, images, and fonts. To run a theme, you have to copy its files to ~/.conky, edit the settings manually to adjust placement, then hunt for missing commands the script needs (like curl or jq). And if the theme breaks, you start a manual troubleshooting journey.
Conkio was created to end this chaos.

What Is Conkio?
Conkio is a modern Conky theme manager, written in Rust for speed and safety, with a native Slint interface (no Electron, no embedded browser, no heavy toolkits). The current version is 1.0.1, released on October 29, 2026.
The core idea: instead of dealing with folders and configuration files manually, you get a single elegant application that lets you discover, run, customize, repair, and share Conky themes. It is a complete “control center” for everything Conky.
Key Features
Theme Library
- Automatic discovery of themes in
~/.conkyand any additional folders you add. - Instant search with smart filters: All, Favorites, Running, Recent, Needs Fix, Broken.
- Clone, rename, export, and delete themes (deleted themes go to the trash, not into the void).
- Supports both the modern
conky.config(Lua) syntax and the legacy syntax.
One-Click Control
- Run, stop, and restart any theme, or run several selected themes at once.
- Tracks every Conky process it starts, so “Stop all managed” never touches processes you started yourself.
- Health check and configuration validation before a theme is displayed.
- Configurable instance limit and process priority (nice level).
- Choose how themes sit on your desktop: above or below other windows.
Built-in Theme Marketplace
- Browse and search real catalogs from GNOME-Look, KDE-Look, Pling, and OpenDesktop.
- Sort, filter by category, read metadata and previews, then Download & Install directly into
~/.conky. - Downloads are limited to trusted store hosts and can be cancelled at any time.
Safe, Flexible Importing
- Drag & drop a folder or archive anywhere onto the window.
- Supports
zip,tar.gz,tar.bz2,tar.xz, and plaintararchives. - Hardened extraction: path-traversal protection and size limits guard against malicious archives.
- Detects the real theme inside messy archives and installs each theme under a clean, unique name.
- Asset path rewriting so images, fonts, and scripts keep working after import.
Health Scan
- Every theme gets a Stable / Needs Fix / Broken indicator.
- Deep scan detects missing assets and missing external commands (
curl,jq,playerctl,sensors,nvidia-smi,nmcli, and many more). - Gives you a ready-to-run install command for your package manager (
pacman, apt, dnf, orzypper). - Warns about Conky version mismatches and Wayland/XWayland quirks.
Customize Without Touching a Config File
- Desktop placement: pick a monitor, set the alignment, and fine-tune the X/Y gap.
- Color palettes with one click: Tokyo Night, Dracula, Nord, Catppuccin Mocha, Rosé Pine, Gruvbox Dark, Solarized Dark, Everforest.
- Native color picker and a simple
name=valuecolor editor. - Smart color remapping that also updates colors embedded in a theme’s scripts.
- Every change is backed up first — restore the latest backup whenever you like.
Desktop Profiles
- Save a group of themes as a profile and switch between setups in one click (work, gaming, minimal…).
- Optionally launch a profile automatically at login.
Modern Desktop Support
Conkio is not just an old tool that only works on X11. It is designed to understand the complexities of the modern desktop:
| Desktop Environments | KDE Plasma, GNOME, XFCE, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, LXDE, COSMIC |
|---|---|
| Wayland Compositors | Hyprland, Sway, Niri |
| Display Servers | X11, Wayland, XWayland |
| Multi-Monitor | Detected via xrandr, hyprctl, and swaymsg |
This means if you are a Hyprland or Sway user (known for the difficulty of handling X11 apps), Conkio understands your environment and offers solutions to common problems (like themes not appearing on tiling compositors).
Installation
Conkio is available for all major distributions, on x86_64 and aarch64 architectures:
Arch Linux / Manjaro / EndeavourOS
wget https://github.com/almezali/conkio/releases/download/1.0.1/conkio-1.0.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
sudo pacman -U conkio-1.0.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
sudo pacman -S --needed conky
Fedora / RHEL / openSUSE
wget https://github.com/almezali/conkio/releases/download/1.0.1/conkio-1.0.1-2.x86_64.rpm
sudo dnf install ./conkio-1.0.1-2.x86_64.rpm
sudo dnf install conky
Debian / Ubuntu / Linux Mint / Pop!_OS
wget https://github.com/almezali/conkio/releases/download/1.0.1/conkio_1.0.1-2_x86_64.deb
sudo apt install ./conkio_1.0.1-2_x86_64.deb
sudo apt install conky-all
AppImage (any distribution)
wget https://github.com/almezali/conkio/releases/download/1.0.1/Conkio-x86_64.AppImage
chmod +x Conkio-x86_64.AppImage
./Conkio-x86_64.AppImage
Important note: Conkio is a theme manager, but it requires Conky itself to be installed to work. Do not forget to install conky (or conky-all on Debian/Ubuntu).
Who Is This Application For?
Suitable for:
- Linux users who love customizing their desktop with Conky but hate dealing with files manually.
- Those who want to try new themes quickly from a built-in marketplace.
- Those facing non-working themes and wanting automatic diagnosis.
- Wayland users who find that most old Conky tools do not understand their environment.
Not suitable for:
- Those who do not use Conky at all.
- Those who want full manual control over every line of Conky configuration (this is still possible, but Conkio simplifies things).
- Those using unsupported distributions (though the AppImage may work).
Summary
Conkio is a small application, but it solves a real problem that has plagued Conky users for years. By combining a modern Rust/Slint interface, a deep understanding of modern desktop environments (including Wayland), and practical features like the health scan and theme marketplace, it raises the desktop customization experience to a new level. If you are a Conky enthusiast, this application deserves a place on your system.
