VoiceStudio: The Fully Local, Open Source Alternative to ElevenLabs for Voice Generation

VoiceStudio: The Fully Local, Open Source Alternative to ElevenLabs for Voice Generation

When Voice Cloning Becomes Yours Alone

For a long time, ElevenLabs was the gold standard in AI voice generation. High quality, convincing voice cloning, and multilingual support. But this quality comes at a price: escalating monthly subscriptions (starting at $5 and reaching $330 or more), a “credit” system that depletes quickly, and most importantly, your voice data is sent to their servers.

VoiceStudio came to offer a completely different alternative: open source, running entirely on your machine, without the cloud, and without any fees.

What Is VoiceStudio?

VoiceStudio is an open source desktop application (licensed under AGPL-3.0) that aims to be a complete alternative to ElevenLabs while maintaining privacy and control. It offers a wide range of voice tools:

  • Voice Cloning: From a short audio clip (5-15 seconds), you can create a digital copy of your voice.
  • Voice Design: Create entirely new voices by describing their characteristics (age, accent, tone, style).
  • Video Dubbing: Translate videos, clone the original speaker’s voice, and then generate the new audio with the same tone.
  • Dictation & Transcription: Convert speech to text, either directly via a keyboard shortcut or from recorded audio files.
  • Audiobook Creation: Convert EPUB/PDF files into audiobooks with multiple voices.

646 Languages and 16 TTS Engines

One of VoiceStudio’s strongest points is flexibility. It does not rely on a single engine but integrates 16 different TTS engines and 11 ASR engines, which you can switch between according to your needs.

  • OmniVoice Engine (Default): A diffusion-based engine specialized in zero-shot voice cloning, supporting 646 languages.
  • Other Engines: Such as CosyVoice 3, GPT-SoVITS, IndexTTS 2.5, VoxCPM2, and Kokoro (very lightweight and runs on the CPU).

This diversity means you are not locked into one engine. If one engine does not work well with your language or device, you can try another.

Comparison with ElevenLabs: Where VoiceStudio Wins and Where It Lags

The developers themselves were frank in the comparison:

Feature VoiceStudio ElevenLabs
Privacy 100% local processing, your data never leaves your device Data is sent to the cloud
Cost Completely free (AGPL-3.0) Monthly subscription ($5-$330+)
Languages 646 languages (catalog) 32 languages (Eleven v3)
Cloning Instant (Zero-shot) from 5-15 seconds Instant (IVC) or professional (PVC)
Voice Quality Depends on the engine, hardware, and sample quality Consistent and high quality by default

Where VoiceStudio wins: Flexibility, privacy, zero cost, and broader language support.

Where ElevenLabs wins: “Out-of-the-box” quality without tuning, especially for English. ElevenLabs’ single engine is meticulously tuned, whereas VoiceStudio’s quality depends on the engine you choose.

Requirements and Hardware

VoiceStudio is designed to run on a wide range of hardware:

Hardware Support
NVIDIA GPU (Windows/Linux) CUDA acceleration
Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) Metal (MPS) acceleration
No GPU (CPU only) Works, but slower (about 3x)
Intel Mac Not supported for local backend (requires a remote server)

Minimum: 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended), and storage space ranging from 10 to 20 GB for models.

Installation

Quick Install (macOS/Linux)

curl -fsSL https://voicestudio.sh/install | sh

On Windows (PowerShell)

irm https://voicestudio.sh/install | iex

Via Docker (Linux)

docker run -d --name omnivoice \
  -p 127.0.0.1:3900:3900 \
  -e OMNIVOICE_API_KEY="$(python3 -c 'import secrets; print(secrets.token_urlsafe(32))')" \
  -v omnivoice-data:/app/omnivoice_data \
  palashdeb/omnivoice-studio:stable

License and Commercial Use

VoiceStudio is licensed under AGPL-3.0. This means:

  • You can use it commercially for free: Sell the audio you produce, dub client videos, or deploy it in your team.
  • The only condition: If you modify VoiceStudio and provide the modified version to others over a network, you must share the modified source code under the same license.

If you want to embed it in a closed-source product, you can obtain a separate commercial license.

Summary

VoiceStudio is not just a “cheap alternative” to ElevenLabs. It is a different model for AI voice generation: a model that respects your privacy, gives you full control at every stage, and does not impose monthly fees or quotas. It may not be at ElevenLabs’ “ready” quality by default, but it offers unmatched flexibility, the ability to work offline, and support for dozens of languages that commercial services do not cover.

For developers, content creators, researchers, and anyone who wants to clone their voice or produce audio content without restrictions, VoiceStudio is worth a serious look.
